THE MEMBER FOR TIMARU.
7 o the Editor of ‘South Canterbury Times ” Sir. —As Parliament lias now settled down to work, it behoves us to watch closely the actions of our members, and especially of each district, to watch the individual member, who represents it. Mr Allwright, member for Lyttelton, and Mr Andrews, one of the members for Christchurch, were both elected on the Grey ticket, and declared themselves supporters of liberal measures. On finding Sir George Grey defeated, and the present Government prepared to carry out a liberal policy, they decided that the interests of their constituents would be best served, by giving over party considerations and factious opposition, and by assisting the Government to carry their measures. How different our member Mr Turnbull. His cry when here, was measures not men. He would not support Sir George Grey, but would support all Liberal measures never mind by whom brought forward. Instead of this, he lias on every occasion voted against the Government, and the very measures which he here pledged himself to do his best to cany, and, has in every possible way hampered and opposed, the most essentially Canterbury Ministry, JN r ew Zealand has yet seen and from whom Canterbury has the right to expect at least a fair share of justice. Now what is the position of Timaru ? There can but be one reply ; absolutely left out in the cold through Mr Turnbull’s inconsistency, and, in being in opposition to the rest of his Canterbury brethren. What Mr Turnbull should do, is to stand forth boldly, and straight forwardly and say to his leader: ‘T find the interests of my constituents demand that I should support the Government measures, and I must consequcntl3 r vote with them.” If he did this lam satisfied, the electors of this district would applaud his action to a man. I think, sir, a public meeting should be convened, and Mr Turnbull should be required to fulfil those pledges ho has made. I am, &c., Naboth.
