MURDER AT APIA.
On the evening of Friday, the 6th of June, a young man, carpenter of the American whaler “ Phocian,” was murdered by another of the crew, a Portuguese. He was assisted in the deed by a wicked character, a native of Tonga, who left a ship, some time ago. It appeared, from the evidence, that the Portuguese had received considerable provocation, the same evening, from the person killed and his companions. But for the Tongan, no excuse could be pleaded, as he assisted in the murder, without any apparent cause. The Portuguese was secured on board his ship, and subsequently delivered up to Captain Magruder of the U.S.S. “St. Mary’s;” but the Tongan fled to Manono, and thence to Savaii.
AH parties had been drinking on shore. And this is another instance of the baneful consequences of selling ardent spirits.
