Farm forestry
Ruapehu Farm Forestry Association is running a farm forestry establishment competition this winter. Chairman Ian Forster said the committee wanted to promote farm forestry in the district and thought a tree establishment competition would be a good family event. Any tree planting initiative over 0.5ha is eligible, for example woodlots, shelterbelts, arboretums, and conservation plantings next to streams or slips. The best established plantings will be the winners. Establishment involves: site selection, site preparation, planting and keeping records. First prize is a Jonsered 204S Turbo Chainsaw and accessories. Entries close on 11 August 1997. "There is a lot of knowledge in the community about alternative species and commercial forestry, Anyone wanting to know more about farm forestry or the competition can contact me," said Mr Forster, ph 06-385-4523, mob 025-443-441.
