OHAKUNE DISTRICT COURT

The following cases were heard by Judge Gregory Ross in the Ohakune District Court on Thursday 19 June. Seniorsergeant Ross Bielby appeared for the police prosecution. Took hot water cylinder Edward James Pickery, 27, unemployed of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to the theft of a copper hot water cylinder valued at $686 from a Palmerston North property on 20 August last year but he denied that the had cut the cylinder from the derelict house . as had been claimed by police. The charge was that he had entered the vacant home with an associate and had cut away the cylinder

causing considerable damage. He denied he had caused any damage to this Housing New Zealand property claiming that it had been "trashed" by the previous tenants. He said he had found the hot water cylinder in the garden outside the house and was in the process of removing it when police arrived and arrested him. He had taken it because he thought it was unwanted. Pickery was ordered to pay the half-share reparation of $275.90 and he was remanded to 24 Jiily to answer a charge of failing to pay outstanding fines. Three charges Donald Kerewaro Mihinui, 24, unemployed

of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to charges of wilful trespass at the Putaruru Hotel of 8 May; assaulting police on 5 July and; threatening to kill of 5 July. He was convicted and remanded to appear for a pre-sentence report on 24 July. Bail was allowed on conditions that he not enter licensed premises, not to purchase or consume alcohol and to reside at an Ohakune-Raetihi Road address during the remand period. Remanded to Wanganui Adrian Michael Brown, 20, mill hand of Wanganui, was remanded to appear in the Wanganui District Court this week to answer charges of driving while

disqualified and failing to give his co'rrect name when stopped in Nelson Street, Wanganui on 18 February. He is also to plead to a new charge for an offence committed in Wanganui. Counsel: Paul Brown Case held over Philip Simmonds, 40, shearer of Hunterville, was to have appeared for a defended hearing on charges

of driving while disqualified and excess breath alcohol but, because of the lateness of last Thursday's sitting (7.55pm) he was remanded to appear as a matter of priority at 10.00 am on 24 July. He had been waiting for his case to be heard from 10am last Thursday but a four-hour defended hearing forced the one-month adj ournment.
