Crater trench idea concerns
The Tongariro Taupo Conservation has "real concerns" about the recommendation that a trench be bulldozed at the crater outlet on Mt Ruapehu. "The peaks of Tongariro National Park were gifted by Ngati Tuwharetoa to the people of New Zealand in 1 887 and Ruapehu is at the heart of this gift," said chairperson Laura Dawson yesterday. "We need to look carefully at cultural and physical issues when managing such an important and sensitive environment."
