Ski fields 'miles away' from threat

With the ski season approaching, Ruapehu mayor Weston Kirton has pointed out that Turoa and Whakapapa are "literally miles away" from the crater lake outlet point and the Whangaehu River. This means neither is threatened by the huge lahar that has been predicted (see separate story). "It is likely that the lake will take 2-3 years to fill up to what is considered a danger point and by that time the situation would be resolved," he said yesterday.
