1 Ø rate demands slip through system

Sending out rate demands for one cent has been stopped, promises council's acting chief executive Chris Ryan. Mr Ryan was asked at the May Ruapehu District Council meeting how many rate demands of less than 10 cents had been sent out in the last batch and what was the cost of sending them. He said apart from the actual costs, the real cost was the

embarrassment to the council. Mr Ryan explained that the rates data was compiled on computer, then sent to a data processing, printing and distribution company. That data was supposed to be reviewed at the council' s offices, on computer, and any such demands deleted before the data file was sent to the company. "That did not happen this time."
