Te Waka Huia

Leaders: Ngapo and Pimia Wehi Established in 1981 and based in Auckland, Te Waka Huia is dedicated to preserving the songs and darices which have been an intrinsic part of Maori tribal activity, enhancing special events and emotions such as the ceremonies of welcome, mourning, love, war or friendship. The group has been winners of the prestigious Aotearoa Maori Performing Arts Festival on three separate occasions. These successes have led to a number of overseas visits, notably representing Aotearoa at the South Pacific Arts Festivals in Townsville, Australia, and Rarotonga, Cook Islands, as well as participating in the opening ceremony of the Olympic games in Seoul, Korea.

In 1996 Te Waka Huia joined the New Zealand National Youth Choir in representing New Zealand at the 4th World Choral Symposium in Sydney.
