Youngster takes Waimarino match play tournament
Taihape' s 16-year-old Danny Thompson played superb golf on the weekend in super conditions to win the Waimarino Golf Club Men's 72-hole Match Play tournament. A round of 68 gross, scoring just 29 on the front nine, five birdies and one eagle, set up the weekend for Danny. Great golf also came from Mark Gleeson, 16, from Hamilton and local lads Dwayne Marsh and Andrew Murdie. Experience came through in the Makaranui Division being won by Ron Sisson on Taihape, closely contested by John Summerhays and Wayne Marsh. An introduction to match play turned out well for new Waimarino players taking out three of the divisions. Con Heinold scored the perfect shot for a perfect weekend — a hole in one on the 17th. The tournament, sponsored by DB Breweries and McCarthy ' s Transport, attracts players from Whangarei to Wellington, for most a regular event on their calendar not to be missed. Visitors commended the club on the presentation of the course, the best seen in years, so special thanks went to
staff and members for their hard work.
