Double win for Ruapehu rugby
Both Ruapehu rugby teams posted wins at home against Waiouru on Saturday. The Firsts won 39-20. Terry Taumata and Craig Pye chalked up two tries each while Marino Mareikura and Paul Trow touched down once each. Chris Winter did the honours with is boot with three conversions and one penalty. Coach Marty McGrath said the boys played their game to plan shutting Waiouru out for much of the game. Waiouru fought back well in the second half but were unable to convert their four tries. Stand-out players for Ruapehu were Nathan Cutler at lock, Chris Lee and Aiden Sutton, flankers, with Brandon Kavanagh, Leonard Piere and Terry Taumata in the back line. The player of the day prize was awarded to the entire
team. The seconds also won, 19-3 by way of three tries and two conversions. Boy Cribb and Renee Te Kura did the honours with Taku Edmonds kicking the goals. The senior seconds have been on a roll winning their match their previous week against Ratana 35-0. Points were credited to Eugene Wilson, three tries; Johnny Hotorini, one try; Renee Te Kura, one try; Mark Trow (who came in on the second half in the wing position), one try. They were successful with one conversion and one penalty, M Morris playing in the centre position making sure of his boot skills. Footnote: Flashing lights and sirens from a local police car heralded the news of Ruapehu' s first double win on Saturday, since the new club was formed.
