O'Neil's 50th bull sale

This month Pat O'Neil and his family will celebrate 50 years of saies of polled Hereford bulls from their Okahu stud. Mr O'Neil said that it is with some pride and plenty of hard work that he and his family have been able to produce, year after year, stud bulls that continue to gain national recognition. The farm has consistently produced stock which eam red ribbon prizes of champion and reserve champion bulls. Mr O'Neil continues in his father's footsteps, who farmed in this way for 30 years before him. At this year' s Royal Easter show in Auckland the stud' s

latest success was with their 18-month old 900kg bull, Lomu II. Lomu stood his ground to come away with junior champion and reserve champion. Lomu II was sired by Okahu Genius which previously won seven royal championships at shows including Te Kuiti, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu and the Auckland Royal Easter Show. Successes for the sire in 1996 meant that of the 14 beef breeds judged, Genius gained 14 firsts, 14 seconds. 14 thirds and 13 fourths, an all-time record. According to Mr O'Neil, Lomu II is tipped to win at the forth-coming Palmerston North Show. The sale is on 19 May and is the first of the circuit.
