School rugby

Schoolboy rugby in Raetihi got under way with the opening season kick-off on Saturday. The fine weather meant that the ground conditions were ideal for the 100 children who turned up keen for action. Raetihi played host on their first day to Taihape in grades from midgets to seniors. The was much support from parents helping with refereeing, coaching and in the club rooms afterwards. There was good keen play on both sides in the intermediate grade, though coaches had to remind boys about high tackling. Early on, quick side stepping by winger Cameron Elere saw him run in with two quick tries (unconverted) for Raetihi. From the kick off the wide gap left by Raetihi gave Taihape Number 11 the chance to run on well and set up their first try (unconverted). On a roll, Taihape notched up another try by No 1 0 Micheal Chase which was converted, the score 10-12. Raetihi then took control with tries coming fast and furious. Tries went to Anthony Te Huia, Hoani Brown and Cameron Elers, a total of five with two conversions. In the third quarter, Taihape came out on attack and showed some good determined play, putting Raetihi under some pressure, taking four more tries. The final score was 39-32 to Raetihi.
