Special past and future

• Last "week I had the opportunity to attend with my mother, the kaumatua hui held at Maungarongo Pa in Ohakune. I would like to thank the convenors, kaumatua Ritchie Akapita and Matiu Mareikura and whanau for a most enlightening day. My mother and the other elders were made to feel so special on the day with morning tea provided before the hui, followed by karakia, then a pleasant and informal discussion on matters of interest to them. Following the meeting all the kaumatua were invited into the kura kaupapa and entertained by Biddy and Vera and Ngati Rangi tamariki. This gave us all a nostalgic feeling of our own school days, the education system then, compared with the opportunities available today. After a beautiful lunch we all left impressed with everything and proud of the young ones and their motivators and teachers behind the scenes. Thank you Maungarongo for your foresight. You have taken time to step into the future and in the same instance look after the past. As I drove away I reflected that - without a past, there is no future.
