Hui to finalise Rangataua sanctuary plan
Ahui is to be held tomorrow, Wednesday 23 April, at the Tirorangi pa at Karioi, to discuss the Rangataua Forest Sanctuary project. "The partners, Ngati Rangi and the Department of Conservation are looking to this hui to give final direction to the sanctuary proposal," said Ngati Rangi Trust chairman Richard Pirere. "This hui will give Ngati Rangi the opportunity to consider other matters including a report on progress to date on research into and the presentation of claims to the Waitangi Tribunal." Since October 1996 the Ngati Rangi
Trust and the Department of Conservation have been looking at the feasibility of establishing a "sanctuary" within an area of the Rangataua State Forest. The area being considered is at Karioi and encompasses the Rotokura and Ninia areas of the Rangiwaea (Pt4Fl, 4F17B, 4 F18, 4F13, 4F7A, Pt4Fl,Pt4F17A, Pt4F15A,4F15B) and the Waiakaki (pt. Waiakaki) land blocks. The plan looks to restore and maintain the unique nature of this area. Over the last six months a combined Ngati Rangi/DoC team has been working on all aspects of the proposal. The process includes Ngati Rangi Hui-a-iwi, the first of these held at Tirorangi Pa, Karioi on 5 March 1996. This was an opportunity for Ngati Rangi whanau, hapu and iwi to consider the proposal.
