Ohakune gardening

Local commercial gardener Helen Anderson spoke to the Ohakune Garden Club about her business as a grower and supplier of cold climate bulbs, at their March meeting. Her bulbs are marketed under the Fiesta brand and include several varieties of iris, erythroniums, fritillaria, and anemones. She showed coloured photographs of her bulb beds and gave some expert advice on feeding, spraying and lifting the various types of bulbs. Bulbs were available for members to purchase. The March meeting of the club was held at the home of Cynthia Dowsett. President Lois McQuarrie welcomed 17 members and guest speaker Helen Anderson.

All members present signed a card for Annie Crichton, a life member of the club who celebrated her 90th birthday at Easter. During general business it was decided to purchase some timber to make new stands for the 1998 Dahlia Show and 100 more green plastic vases for display of the show blooms. The venue of the April meeting — the AGM — will be Sue Rokstadt's in Shannon Street. Nita Wilde and Peggy Frew volunteered to be hostesses The competitions for 22 April will be; an autumn arrangement; chrysanthemum; flower of choice; shrub of choice. The raffle of an Erica was won by L Taylor.

March competition results: Flower of choice: 1 M Warren, 2 L McQuarrie, 3 L Taylor. Shrub of choice: 1 B Kennedy, 2 T Smart, 3 D Barnes. Rose: 1 E Beavis, 2 Mrs Palmer, 3 T Smart. ColJ lection of 5 perennials: 1 P Johnson, 2 S Rokstadt, 3 N Wilde.
