Unregistered dogs 'an expensive luxury'

The Ruapehu District Council is putting the bite on owners of unregistered dogs. The council says many owners have ignored reminder notices and requests to register. Defaulters are now being issued with infringement notices which will require them to pay a $200 fine on top of the registration fee. "It would appear that some people are waiting to be caught before paying and it is unfair on the good dog owners who meet their responsibilities, and they and the ratepayer should not be subsidising the cost for the follow up work required to reduce the number of unregistered dogs in the District," said council chief executive Cliff Houston.
