Silence for Raurimu

Before they started on formal business at last week's monthly meeting Mayor Weston Kirton asked Ruapehu District councillors to stand for a moment's silence in memory of the six people who died in Raurimu on 8 February. Councillors were addressed by Police Snr Sgt 'Buck' Buchanan who thanked the council and the community, on behalf of the police, for the help and co-operation they received in making all necessary facilities available when they were needed. He said 50 extra police had been draftedinto Taumarunui for the immediate emergency and subsequent investigation. Deputy mayor Cr Bob Peck expressed appreciation to the Rev Val Ritchie of Taumarunui for organising the commemorative service that was held at Raurimu four days later (12 February) which was attended by about 400 people.
