Tourist operator quits

Winston Oliver of Orautoha has decided to "call it quits" so far as his plans to establish a tourist operation on the Whanganui River using his houseboat Wakapai. Ongoing battles with the river Maori about the use of the river has persuaded Mr Oliver to give up a potential major tourist attraction and to seek an alternative venue from which to operate ... the Marlborough Sounds is one of the options he will be investigating. Despite his Whanganui River operation getting the green light under district council regulations to operate as a "permitted activity", local river iwi have effectively put a stop to the enterprise citing Maori claims to the river under the Waitangi Tribunal.
