Bus belts

• As a bus driver for the past 23 years, I find Mr Weston Kirton's comments on legalising seatbelts in buses a little overwhelming. What experience has Mr Kirton had as far as driving buses? As the bus driver is responsible for the safety of all passengers including school bus students, is Mr Kirton going to expect the driver to check and alter each seatbelt as a student sits down? What about standing passengers, or are they going to be non-existent? Who will police it, as the driver already has enough responsibilities? Safety belts in buses are just as likely to injure a student as they are to save. Unfortunately some students seem to think that buses are a place to skylark in, putting pressure on the driver. I suggest to Mr Kirton that the old system should be brought back where a driver can pull off the road and order the troublemakers off the bus. The driver will then be able to pay full attention to what he or she started out doing.
