Joint council-DoC info centre mooted
Shifting the Ruapehu District C o u n c i 1 ' s Ohakune information centre to the Department of Conservation's Ohakune field centre at the bottom of the Ohakune Mountain Road is an option that is currently being explored. The council is preparing information on the move as one option to resolving the cost issue associated with building a new centre, said marketing manager Bruce Rollinson. "The current building is rapidly coming to the end of its life, with uneconomic maintenance costs rapidly increasing," said council chief executi ve officer Cliff Houston. He said the cost of a new
building on the centre' s current site will also be presented for consideration along with all the associated issues that will need to be researched. "Council is not prepared
to speculate as to any details at this very early stage as it could prejudice any negotiations that will need to be undertaken during the preparation of the alternative proposals," he added.
The idea was recently mooted at a regular open meeting called the "Think Tank", that is held every Wednesday evening at.the Powderhorn Chateau. (See separate story)-.
