The following report outlines some of the occurrences police have attended to over the holiday break: Ohakune • Three local people were arrested following a brawl outside the Ruapehu Hotel in Seddon Street, Raetihi, during the early hours of Christmas morning. An Ohakune Police Constable received minor injuries during the altercation. • Alcohol was involved in an accident that occurred on the Parapara road south of Raetihi on Christmas Day. The driver of the vehicle was taken to Wanganui Police Station to undergo breath testing procedures. • An Ohakune takeaways was burgled overnight on Thursday 26 December. Foodstuffs were taken. • Police issued six infringement notices relating to speed of vehicles between 26-27 December. Vehicles stopped were returning from the Wanganui Street Car Races. • There were several arrests during the week ending 5 January. A local man was arrested after a search warrant was executed on a Raetihi Road house and property stolen from a burglary on State Highway 49 recovered. Another occupant of the house was charged with cultivation of cannabis. • A Dunedin man was arrested for theft of food from the Ohakune motorcamp after leaving the motorcamp without paying, then camping nearby and returning to steal food. He was also found to be in possession of a number of items of clothing that could have been stolen from the local area'. • On Friday night, 3 January, another local man was arrested for supplying cannabis to a person under 1 8 years. • In the early hours of Saturday morning, 4 January, Police were alerted by a member of the public to suspicious activity at a Rangataua address. On investigating Police located a van full of stolen property and more inside the house. Two persons were subsequently arrested for breaking into about seven houses that evening and several more prior to that. These burglaries occurred to houses in both Rangataua and Ohakune. It was of concem to Police that one Rangataua resident heard them in a neighbour's house but did not call the police. • Two Rangataua residents were also wamed for possession of cannabis after Police visited their address and located a small amount. • There were two domestic incidents attended during the week. In one, firearms were removed from the address and a trespass notice issued and in the second an assault complaint was taken and enquiries are continuing to locate the offender. • In the early hours of Sunday moming, 4 January there was a burglary to a Foyle Street address and also one to a local takeaway bar. • Also reported was damage to the public toilets in Clyde street and Goldfinch street, possibly the work of children. The Rangataua hall also had a lot of windows smashed. • A car in Pitt Street, Raetihi, was broken into and the stereo cassette player stolen. An address in Ward Street
had a large amount of damage caused to it. There was also damage done to the Raetihi swimming pool. • Numerous traffic tickets were issued during the week for vehicle licensing breaches, seatbelt offences and speed. Waiouru • Waiouru Police attended several motor vehicle accidents during the Christmas break. Police attended a headon collision at Mulvay's Corner on Christmas Day which involved an intoxicated motorist. Another that occurred on State Highway One near the Three Sisters involved three vehicles but was fortunately non-injury The sole occupant of another vehicle that rolled near the summit of the Desert Road was not so lucky and received minor injuries. • Waiouru assisted Taihape Police with an investigation into the accidental drowning of a German tourist that occurred at Mangaweka on Christmas Eve. • A Masterton man was arrested by Waiouru Police for the theft of a hitchhiker's bags on Christmas Eve. • A Porirua man was arrested for the burglary of Bennett' s Furnishing in Taihape on 27 December. He is facing additional charges of possession of an offensive weapon, supplying false details and other traffic matters. • The week ending 5 January was a quiet week crimewise but very busy on the roads with a large number of *555 calls being received concerning dangerous overtaking manoeuvres or inconsiderate driving, with numerous tickets issued. The cold conditions on the Desert Road required motorists to take additional care. • There was a further report of Kaimanawa horses within close proximity of State Highway One and it seems this is going to be an ongoing potential danger, said Police.
