Health centre for Pipiriki
A Maori health centre for Pipiriki is on the way. An agreement was signed between the Pipiriki people and the Central Regional Health Authority (CRHA) last week to provide the centre. "It has been a dream of the people for a long time," said co-ordinator Pet McDonnell, at the signing, held at Paraweka Marae attended by about 70 people. Mrs McDonnell said the health centre concept had been discussed a lot amongst the Pipiriki community so she decided to work on it and with help from Raetihi nurse Rita Gray, formulated a proposal which was presented to the CRHA. Final details still have to be worked through on premises, a name and staffing. They hope to have it operating by Christmas. Poor road access to the community is cited as one of the reasons for the need. Mrs McDonnell said having a nurse at the centre who could deal with some of the minor problems would be a bonus for the community. It is also hoped in the future to attract a doctor to visit the centre on a regular basis.
