Runners in the 25th Around the Mountains Relay experienced a typical broadsheet of conditions on Saturday. Throughout the early morning I theyhadgusty winds withsomecool rain, laterdeveloping I into hail and eventually the sun emerged for the late I afternoon finish at the Army Museum. More than 2000 runners took on the 1 50km relay around ■ the Tongariro National Park mountains of Ruapehu, I Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. Teams registered their arrival I at the Army Museum in Waiouru on Friday and the first I teams were sent on their way in the early hours of Saturday I morning from the Army Camp Headquarters by the'ComI mander of the Army Training Group, Colonel Marshall at I 2am and the remainder at 3am. The first team home was Team 701 , Ranui Pukekohes I with a time of 9 hours 53 minutes 48 seconds to win the I Open Grade $750 and a silver medallion for each team I member. The next was Team 602, Knob and Knockers I with a time of 10 hours 5 minutes 47 seconds to win the I . Composite Grade, $750 and a medallion each. The fastest ■ Social Grade team was Team 363, Ho Chi Minh at 10 I hours 48 minutes 24 seconds to win the Oasis Hotel Motel I Trophy . The Ranui Pukekohes were also awarded $500 for I the fastest team overall. All runners were off the highways by 6pm on Saturday I and the prizes were awarded by the Commander at the I function held in the large marquee that evening. Next I year's ATMR will be conducted on 29 November 1997.
