Competition for skate park design

Skateboarders and in-line skaters are to be asked to tak part in a competition to design a skating park for Ohakune At their meeting last Thursday the Waimarino Commu nity B oard supported a recommendation that the sports co ordinator initiate a design competition, "to ensure usei input into any design". The preferred site for the park is suggested as in Jubile Park behind the swimming pool in the tennis courts area with access from Raetihi Road and the footbridge (yet tc be replaced). The board was told the park needed to be away fron residences because of noise, but central. The complex may include concrete slabs, tubes, half tubes, seating, drinking fountain, lighting and fencing costing around $50,000. Member Ellen Gould said the project could be made to suit an available budget. She said the college pupils who have worked on the plan should be congratulated. "We're always on about roads and bridges and ditches and it's not often that we are asked to look at something for the kids," she said. Member John Compton suggested funds could come from the Ohakune Borough Reserves Contribution fund.
