RCL to run pools

Ruapehu District's council-owned swimming pools will be operated by Ruapehu Construction Limited this summer, following unsuccessful negotiations with the Taumarunui High School Trust Bank Pool trustees and Sport Wanganui. Council chief executive officer Cliff Houston told the council that there was a $14,000 gap between what the council was prepared to pay for the contract and the amount the trust had tendered. He added that the council had been "generous" with its price although it was a "fair and reasonable deal" with no hiddfen subsidy for the trust. However, negotiations were not completely finished, said deputy CEO Chris Ryan. The Ohakune pool is expected to open mid-November and the Raetihi pool in the frrst week of December, following cleaning and painting work.
