Ohakune pony club news

The Ohakune Pony Club hosted an open day on the Waiouru Saddle Club grounds on Saturday 19 October. There was a turnout of 10 members and nine visitors. As there was only one rider amongst the visitors, Wayne and Michelle Nicholls assisted by Robyn Hodder and a host of parents leading the budding riders who were kept very busy all day. Several of the new riders dispensed with their leaders during the day and had lots of fun with the games. They all had a taste of a true pony club rally with instructional sessions on riding and pony care and games including grandmothers footsteps, the message game, tyre race and bending and the litter race. The younger regular pony club children joined in the game in the afternoon while the seniors tried out the cross country course which was new to most. The club thanked the helpers and those who loaned and transported ponies from Ohakune and Raetihi. The previous Monday evening four members and a non-member passed their riding and road safety

certificate kindly taken by Jeanette Garrett BHSI. The riders were Hone Brausch, Biddy Johnson, Erin and Kyla Newton and Nata Nicholls. The club's recent drive to sell lamingtons, as the final fund raiser for their shed was very successful. They hope to have the shed in place by the Waimarino Gymkhana and Ohakune Tetrathlon which are to be held 16 and 17 November. Any local people who would like to participate in either the tetrathlon — cross country running and riding, air rifle shooting and swimming — or the triathlon, the same events minus the riding, are welcome. For details contact Evelyn Cooper, 385-8466. Members have a full schedule right until Christmas with rallies, the club dressage day and gamblers, the games day and a combined rally with Raetihi members and competitions further afield for senior riders in Taumarunui and Kaitieki. Some members recently travelled to Oruanui near Taupo and to Levin gaining valuable experience.
