Waimarino golf club champions found

Saturday 19 October dawned overcast but fine, tee-off at 8.30am saw all golfers keen to get under way in the Waimarino Golf Club's championships. By lunch time a clear gap had opened between most of the pairs of golfers. The afternoon saw Trevor Frederick up five holes on Jim Corbett but Jim soon showed that Trevor was not going to have everything his own way by winning the first four holes. The match then developed into a tough battle until Trevor had revenge over Jim by reversing last year's defeat and winning on the 34th hole. A similar story in the ladies senior final where Pat Mcllroy took a four hole lead into the afternoon round over Carol Leary. However, Carol was not going to relinquish her title that easily and slowly used her previous finals experience to pull back the lead. Carol then took out the match on the 34th hole to win her third championship in a row. Pat can look back on a game where she had her chances but the experience gained will be invaluable in future attempts in the club championships. In the intermediate mens final Qraham Lind had a four hole lead over his opponent, Neil Lietz. Any thought by Neil of doing what the golfers in front of him were doing were soon pushed aside by Graham who used his experience in golf finals to walk away with his third title in three years. Except this year instead of the junior title he went one better. In the ladies bronze 1 final which was played on Friday Bernice Frost proved to be too strong for Goldie Fraser. In the mens junior final a great tussle was had by Alan Murdie and Jason Whale. At lunch time Jason had a one hole lead over Alan and the game over the afternoon see-sawed backward and forward. Jason was looking good for the win with two holes to go he was two up. Alan then struck back with a par and a birdie to take the match to extra holes. On the second extra hole Alan finally prevailed with the win. In the ladies bronze 2 division

experience took on youth. Heather Cranston played Jenny Murdie over 18 holes. Jenny had shown good form to get to the final but Heather had been in this position before. Jenny played well but Heather' s experience and superior play around the greens, where most games are won or lost, was far too consistent. The last final of the day was between Dwayne Marsh and Brian Hays, the two youngest playing members of the club. Both played consistent golf over the first nine holes with Dwayne tuming one up. Brian tried hard over the next few holes but was unable to peg back Dwayne who went on two win 4 in.3, the club is sure that this is only the start of many battles in front of these young players. Overall, the day was very successful with everyone joining in the celebrations of the champions and the losers. Sunday golf With the Club Champs over the day before a small field played in the Sunday competition. Proving that their wins in the club champs the day before was no fluke Trevor Frederick and Dwayne Marsh both scored very well to win the senior and junior haggle respectively. Trevor scoring a 77 was 5 up on par as was Dwayne who shot a career best 85 . Second in the seniors was by lot Don Windle on even par and in the juniors Mike Fraser on 3 up.The winner of the ladies competition and a welcome back to Elaine Goldfinch from injury, just to prove she can still do it. Members are reminded of the Beedees, Alpine Restaurant mixed foursomes to be played on 2 November at the club. Anyone who would like to enter or who needs a partner should get in contact with the respective club captains. The 1996 season comes to a close on 1 0 November. This however, is not the end of golf for the year as Twilight golf begins on 7 November. Anyone prepared to help over this competition should get in contact with the club captain as soon as possible.
