42 Traverse course for arduous bike race

The Forest Crossing Mountain Bike Race will be held for the fourth year on Saturday 9 November. The race starts in National Park Village but will this year include a new section across the Landcorp Taurewa Farmblock. Riders will head down SH47 until just past the Chateau turn off and then turn left and run through the farm section. Meeting up with Kapoors Road at the barn site, the route then follows the 42 Traverse through the stunning Tongariro Forest. The race has become increasingly popular since it was first held in 1993, with

203 competitors lining up at the start line last year. As a new initiative, the race includes the first-ever 'Rugged Running Marathon' section. Runners are able to participate in what may well be the toughest 42km race that marathon runners are likely to encounter. Race organiser, Maxine Parker said there has already been considerable interest in the running race, from throughoutthe North Island. "This area is already very popular with a wide range of visitors because of the great beauty and wilderness aspect, and a fabulous track

that leads participants on an exciting journey". The race finishes at a lodge situated beside the Whakapapa River in Owhango. The Taumarunui CB Club provide marshals who are equipped with CB radios, provide invaluable communication and support for all race entrants. From their various locations throughout the Tongariro Forest the marshals report the progress of each com-

petitor and in the event of an emergency, can arrange for an evacuation. Karl Bain, originally from Taumarunui, but now residing in Hamilton has won all three previous races. With competition increasing every year it may be hard to pick a winner this year. For further information and entry forms, contact Maxine parker, phone 07-892-2938, Fax 07-892-2809.
