College kids down on the farm
By pupils Janine Hall & Tammy Evans A group of eight Ruapehu College pupils travelled to the Taratahi Agricultural Centre in Masterton for a week recently for a general farm skills course, based on skills suchas fencing, docking, pruning, tractor driv- , ing and motorbike skills. The students involved were Tammy Evans, Paul Wilson, Janine Hall, Aaron Fredericksen, Chris Hammond, Phillip Hansen and Thomas Journeaux. Taratahi was set up in 1919 as a training farm for menretuming from the First i World War. It now runs 1 courses for schools as well ! as 20- and 40- week courses. Students stay on site at Taratahi. Taratahi 's total area of 299 hectares is divided into two farms and an adminis-
tration, workshop and hostel area. The beef and sheep unit is 185 hectares and holds 1700 Romney breeding ewes and 300 dairy cattle. The dairy unit is 98 hectares with 270 dairy cattle.
