Lizards listed for protection

New Zealand' s native lizards will be fully protected by law as of 14 October. Pre viously , four of the most common were unprotected. Since 1981 several new species closely related to the previously unprotected species have been identified but these have not yet been fully described or their distribution determined. "In recent times there has been concern about widespread commercial collection of the common species. This is especially concerning given the difficulty in correctly- identifying some of these new species," said Department of Conservation officer Cam Speedy. As of 14 October 1996 it will be an offence against the Wildlife Act for any person to have any New Zealand lizard in their possession, to capture them from the wild or to buy or sell them without a permit from DoC.
