Contractors choose metal sources
It is up to a road works contractor where they source metal and not the council, the Waimarino Community Board was told at their last meeting. Board member Gary Rawnsley had earlier asked for a report on available sources of metal in the Waimarino, expressing concern that metal was being carted into the Ruatiti Valley when there were adequate sources nearby. Chief engineer Bruce Dobson explained that the council "ensures that it gets the best price overall for jobs through the competitive tendering system" and so the contractor has the incentive to keep metal costs as low as possible to win contracts. An investigation into sources would be expensive and would be contrary to the council' s practice of tendering out physical works. Mr Dobson said a similar exercise in the Taumarunui area showed that in general alternative sources were uneconomic once the licensing, winning and processing the metal were factored.
