Sixth-former promoted to Army officer
contributed by the college A sixth former from Ruapehu College has been selected to join the army for a week, with 39 other students from around the country. Melissa Schlegel will live the life of an officer as part of the Army's plan to expose young people to career opportunities in the Armed Forces. □ The North Island Secondary Schools Skiing Competition kicked off on Sunday night with the managers meeting at Ruapehu College. The skiing is being held at Whakapapa on Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday as a back-up day. Prize-giving is held on Tuesday night. □ The fourth formers at Ruapehu College blitzed the opposition in the Mathex competition in Wanganui on Wednesday night, coming in first out of 28 teams from the Wanganui region. Mathex is a problem-solving team exercise held annually all over New Zealand. Kate Woodhouse, Neil Bradley, Bojan Legner and EmmaForster formed the winning team. □ Ruapehu College held its badminton championships on Sunday 8 September in the College Gymnasium. The competition included singles, doubles and mixed doubles. □ Staff at the College spent Monday afternoon last week assessing the library collection in terms of its relevance to the new curricula. Adviser to the Library 2000 Action Team, Debbie Roxburgh, was very pleased with the information collated and this data will be used in updating and injecting new life into the library facilities.
