Regional rates
Rates for the Manawatu Wanganui Regional Council were approved for the 1996/97 financial year in July, with a 1.94% increase on the general rate. Activities funded by the MWRC general rate include preparation of policy for sustainable resource management, reporting on compliance with resource consents, preparation of long-term managementplans forriver anddrainage schemes, flood and erosion control works on rivers and land drainage works, emergency management preparedness, comprehensive programmes for soil conservation,
plant pest and animal pest management, possum control, gravel resource management and the facilitation and coordination of regional tourism. MWRC rates are collected by the district councils on behalf of the regional council..
