Horse sense
A British soldier by the name of Sergeant James Brumby is credited with being responsible for the Australasian name "brumbies" when referring to the Kaimanawa Wild Horses. He is said to have arrived in Sydney in 1791 where he bred horses as a side-line. His herd roamed widely thanks to a lack of fences which upset residents. A policeman asked about the horses and was told they were "Brumby' s".
