Sports co-ordinator for Ruapehu

The Ruapehu District Council has signed an agreement with Sport Wanganui and the Hillary Commission to employ a Sports and recreation co-ordinator for the district. Sport Wanganui is a charitable trust and is one of 1 7 sports trusts operating throughout New Zealand established to deliver sports and recreation services. Funding is provided by the Hillary Commission for core services such as KiwiSport, KiwiSeniors, volunteer and administrators' training and a number of other programmes which aim to promote health, education and positive social behaviour through sport and active recreation. Each year Sport Wanganui organises a variety of programmes including: have a go day ; holiday programmes; weekly walk-

ing groups; volunteer of the year award; women' s fesitvals; rest home games; corporate rat race; sports awards. In addition Sport Wanganui has negotiated with the Hillary Commission for additional funding to assist with the employment of a sport and recreation co-ordinator for Ruapehu. Sport Wanganui and the council have recently run an advertising programme to find a co-ordinator, "a person with proven organisational skills, a good communicator, an independent and self-motivated worker who is committed to the development of sport and increasing participation." Sports help for Ruapehu

FROM PAGE 1 to provide programmes for "at risk" youth," said council chief executive officer Cliff Houston. "The link between Sport Wanganui and the council will bring a unified approach to the provision of programmes and services to increase participation in sport and active recreation and increase the use of council sporting facilities. The link between the council and sports clubs and associations should be a positive and beneficial arrangement," he said. The council hopes that a co-ordinator will be appointed during August.
