Raetihi business to close, eruption partly to blame
A Raetihi business closes its doors this week, with the Ruapehu eruption named as one of the factors in its demise. The family business of Bennett's Furnishers is closing on Friday. Proprietor Chris Bennett said the declining passing foot traffic was the main reason for closing, but that the eruption was a major contributing factor. He said the shop missed out on saies at the end of last winter that usually help tide them over the summer and the delayed start of this ski season has meant they have not had a chance to recover. Ruapehu deputy mayor Bob Peck told the Bulletin he was sure all Raetihi residents would be saddened by the withdrawal. "On behalf of Raetihi I would like to thank Chris for his loyalty over the years to the people of Raetihi and the Waimarino." He said he wished him well for the future and understands the struggle he went through the maintain the business in Raetihi. (More page 12)
