More Ruapehu blasts
Ruapehu sprang back into eruption life at 2.35pm yesterday afternoon with reports of an ash column Teaching over 20,000 feet, as reported by aircraft flying at 23,000ft. Brad Scott of the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said the eruption was not particularly large but that more vigourous eruptions could follow. He said the activity was similar to that of 6&7 July. The variable low level winds widely distributed the gas plume and it was reported to have been detected in the South Island. Before the recent activity, little or no ashfall on the mountain had been reported. Winds were forecast to shift from the north-west to the west. A Level Three scientific alert remained.
