$10,000 for crater study from ECNZ
ECNZ is to chip in $ 10,000 to the engineering study of the Ruapehu Crater Lake wall proposed by the Department of Conservation. The total cost is estimated at $30,000. The electricity corporation has also promised to provide a senior civil engineer to take part in the project steering group. General manager of generation, Kieran Devine, said ECNZ takes its role in the local community very seriously and has contributed to a number of environmental and river works in the area. "The long-term future of the mountain is an important concern for local residents and businesses, therefore ECNZ is pleased to be able to support valuable research into the effects of the current volcanic activity." If the crater wall did collapse once the lake was refilled, estimated to take four years, a number of ECNZ assets that are part of theTongariro Power Scheme could be threatened by the subsequent lahar. iinn
