Rata wins, possum loses
A substantial increase in flowering rata as well as new growth has been noted in the Wanganui River trench in a recent survey. This follows the 1080 poison blitz on possums in the Whanganui National Park last year, the benefits of which are beginning to emerge.
Department of Conservation Whanganui field centre manager John Lythgoe said last week a recent bird life survey showed that any improvement had still to be established. The Kirikiriroa Peninsula was being used as a trial area, said Pipiriki field
centre manager Dennis McDonnell, where all goats had been shot and the peninsula fenced with possum bait stations.
