Rangitikei loses own work

Rangitikei has suffered a fate forewarned during the establishment of Ruapehu' s Local Authority Trading Enterprise (LATE) several years ago — - the council' s works company has lost the contract for a large chunk of its own road works. Transit New Zealand requires that all councils tender out such work and it was during this stage that Rangitikei Contracts Limited lost the tender, to Fulton Hogan Ltd. During the establi shment phase of Ruapehu Construction Limited it was often stated that council could lose its own work if the company were not set up to be competitive, Rangitikei mayor John Wilson warns other councils with LATE's may also in future have to award contracts to other companies.

Tenders received for the Rangitikei work were: Fulton Hogan Ltd, $3.34m; Northgate Construction Ltd, $3.47m; Works Civil Construction, $3. 70m;

Rangitikei Contracts Ltd, $4. 53m; Ruapehu Construction Ltd, $4. 88m; Higgins Contractors Ltd, $5. 64m; Wanganui Asphalts Ltd, $6.39m.
