Cosford queries Pipiriki visitor centre funding decision

When Ruapehu District councillors met in Taumarunui for their May meeting to approve the 1996/97 Draft Annual Plan, the need to establish a visitor information centre, in conjunction with the Department of Conservation, in Pipiriki was questioned. Cr Graeme Cosford said he was concerned at the level of funding ($19,000 per year) needed to employ a staff member at the proposed visitor centre, when visitors to Pipiriki usually picked up their information at either the Ohakune or Raetihi visitor information centres before they set out. He suggested that if information was to be provided in Pipiriki it could be made available in a simpler form without the need to set up an information centre which has to be staffed. The 1996/97 Draft Annual Plan has allocated a sum of $60,000 towards the cost of estabfishing the proposed Pipiriki Visitor Centre.
