Ruatiti rubbish plan deemed too dear

$80 per cubic metre is too much to pay to shift rubbish, so Ruatiti will not have its own rubbish transfer station, with residents instead asked to use the Orautoha station a further 5km along the road. The Waimarino Community Board accepted a recommendation from environmental asset manager Suzienne Sledgers last week to remove the skip bin from the Ruatiti Domain once the current contract has expired. As part of the maintenance contract at the domain, rubbish is to be in future left in drums and taken to the Orautoha station. The board had asked if it was feasible for a skip bin to be located at the domain for the holidays then moved to a more accessible location for locals for the remaining 10 months.

. Ms Sledgers said in her report that the relocation of the skip bin to the dog dosing strip was possible but that a resource consent was required. This, along with the work involved, would cost $15,000. The bin was on average 20 per cent full through the holiday period and was expected to be less than 15 per cent full at other times. With the usage as measured and the current annual contract price to provide and service the skip bin being $298 per month, she said the cost of removing one cubic metre of refuse is estimated to be $80.17. By comparison the National Park Transfer Station cost was $5.30 per cubic metre. The 1994/95 Landfill Improvement budget provided $12,000 for the Ruatiti Transfer Station, which was 75 per cent expended, said Ms Sledgers.
