13,000 ha of Maori land unrated
There are currently 13,000 hectares of Maori land in the Ruapehu District that have had rates written off, the council heard at their March meeting. Cr Graeme Cosford asked if there were any plans yet to develop this land, and if not, should the council review the policy. "The sooner there are some positive moves I'd be much happier (about the policy)," said Mr Cosford. The policy of writing off rates on multi-
ple-ownership undeveloped Maori land is aimed at encouraging development of the land, by removing the burden of clearing the uncollectable back-rates. Council chief executive Cliff Houston said there were moves being made towards joint venture developments being discussed with the local iwi authorities. Cr Stuart- Shaw said it seemed it just needed "someone to get the ball rolling" to get joint- venture forestry going.
