Senior scouts take to the water
Ten of the senior Scouts from the Ohakune Scout Troop recently undertook kayak training under the instruction of Alan and Beth Gardner of Yeti Tours. All of the Scouts selected have previously qualified for both their s wimming and lifesaving badges, and most have had some prior experience in kayaks. Their first stage of training was in a pool where they learned how to get into a kayak from the edge of a pool, river or lake and also the drill following tipping out. This is a skill they all saidthey wouldneverneed, but were all forced to practice anyway. Stage two consisted of stroke practice at Lakes Reserve. Some found paddling in a straight line virtually impossible, but most picked it easily and were soon racing each other around the lake.
The scouts' next challenge will be kayaking down a portion of the Rangitikei River near Mangaweka during the
troop' s Easter camp. The senior scouts will paddle safety boats for a group of the junior scouts who will be tubing the same
stretch below the Mangaweka Domain in rubber rafts supplied by the Bulls ScoutTroop, who will * be camping with them.
