Eruption's effects on farm soil studied

Farmers and scientists are to get together in Napier this month to discuss the impact of Ruapehu ' s eruptions on soil fertility. Three Massey University scientists Vince Neal, Mike Hedley and Shane Cronin have been studying the effects of the eruption on soil fertility in the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne regions. Of the many elements found in the ash, sulphur is the most important to farmers. The eruption of 1 1 October contained 3.6 per cent sulphur and the 1 4 October eruption which mainly affected Hawkes Bay, contained about one per cent. Dr Hedley said it would be important for farmers to adapt their topdressing to take the ash effects into account.
