McCarthy is Taupo candidate
John McCarthy, founding member of the 'Farmers for Change" group, has been selected Taupo electorate National Party Candidate, promising a voice for provincial New Zealand. Waimarino falls inside the Taupo Electorate under the new MMP boundaries. Mr McCarthy farms 1200 hectares near Ohakune and is also a partner in an ad-
venture tourism operation. He states that his reason for seeking the candidacy is that he sees it as vital that the aspirations of provincial New Zealand are represented in the MMP environment. He says that he is "committed to equal access to tax funded services for provincial New Zealand". He says his position is based around the "interdependance of town
and country". He is well-known as being outspoken in agricul-ture-politics. The nationwide Farmers for Change group he helped form aims to improve the performance of the meat and wool indiis-
try with an emphasis on meat and wool. The group lobbied to have the electoral college system of appointing meat and wool board directors in favour of direct elections. He served two terms on
the meat and wool board electoral committee, he was a member of the ministerial committee on the Gatt round. A keen dog trialist, he has served as president of the Raetihi Dog Trial Club.
