National freestyle ski team

The New Zealand Freestyle Ski Team forthe 1995/ 96 northern winter was named last Sunday week with only one new face in the 8-person team. The team is divided up into National and Development teams. For the first time since the team was formed in late 1989 the North Island skiers outnumbered South Island skiers, with five North Island Whakapapa skiers named. The National Team for the 1995/96 season is: Nick Mills, (22) from Wanaka; David Anderson, ( 20) from Dunedin; Roland Matthews, (25) from New Plymouth. The Development Team is: Richard Ussher, (19) from Wellington; Damien Matthews, (28) from New Plymouth; Jason Pickelmann, (19) from Tauranga; Sarah Dunckly, (18) from Palmerston; Catherine Smiley , (2 1 ) from Hamilton. The only "new" team member of the T reble Conebased New Zealand Freestyle Ski Team is Damien Matthews from New Plymouth. Matthews was on the national Team in 1994 but a string of poor results saw him dropped at the end of that season. Damien Matthews finished 5th on the 1995 Power bar Mogul Tour with some consistent results and has been put back onto the Development Team. The team will assemble in Whistler resort, two hours north of Vancouver, Canada, at the end of November and from there they will travel to Germany, Austria, the Czech republic, Switzerland, France and the USA in competing on the Europa Cup and Nor Am circuit. They will compete in 1 1 competitions in

an intense six-week schedule in January and February. Teamcoach KirkLeslie has this to say of the coming season: "The Team's goals for this season are to make Finals (top 12) at this level. To achieve this they will need to improve their scores by around v10% which is clearly achievable given their improvements made over the New Zealand winter. Those skiers who make Finals in Nor Ams and Europa Cups this season will then compete on the Freestyle World Cup circuit in the 1996/97 season, setting them up to make a real impact in the following Olympic season (199798)," Jerry Noble, the New Zealand Freestyle Ski Association executive director says the three outstanding Kiwi skiers from the Power Bar Mogul Tour, David Anderson, Richard Ussher and Sarah Dunckly must rate as NZ' s best hopes along with Nick Mills.
