Hanging baskets for gardeners
The highlight of the last Ohakune Garden Club meeting was a demonstration of hanging baskets by Helen Robinson. Helen works with the Wanganui District Council, providing baskets for their Mainstreet project. The monthly meeting was held at Fran and Ronald Frew's on 26 September. There were 23 people present including several visitors from other clubs. Most members had seen and admired the beautiful show of hanging baskets in the business area of Wanganui over the past year.
Helen provided each person at the meeting with photocopied material containing the "recipes" and some suggestions on how and what to plant. The demonstration basket was raffled and was won by Noeline Reynolds. Helen then judged the club competitions. The results were: Collection of 5 Bulb.s : IN Reynolds 2. T Reynolds 3. F Frew. Flower of Choice: 1. D Barnes 2. L McQuarrie 3 L McQuarrie. Shrub of Choice: 1. D Barnes 2. N Wilde 3. L McQuarrie. Two annual garden com-
petitions were discussed in general business. One is for members only, where the Raetihi Garden Club will be asked to provide judges for the nominated gardens which will be subject to two judgings, spring and summer. Extra points would be given for vegetable gardens. The second competition is for the Ci vic Pride A ward. These gardens will be judged from the street only. Noeline and Trevor Reynolds were appointed to judge this award which is open to any Ohakune resident. Judging for this is expected to be completed by February. The next meeting of the club is today, 24 October at 7pm, when the Club will visit Stouts garden.
