Ruapehu in tourism awards line-up

Four fmalists from the Ruapehu District have been selected for the 1995 New Zealand Tourism Awards to be held in Dunedin on 3 November 1995. The Heartland New Zealand Marketing Group incorporating the Ruapehu District Council's marketing unit, Taupo District Council, Tourism Waikato and Destination Napier are fmalists in the marketing category. Council marketing manager Bruce Rollinson said the Heartland Group was very pleased to be one of three finalists in the category and that it is recognition of the results and rapid progress the group has made in attracting international visitors to the Central North Island over the past three years. Ruapehu will be strongly represented at the awards with three other finalists. - The Grand Chateau is a finalist in the mid-range regional accommodation category — "billed as New Zealand' sclassic resort, the Chateau aims to help grow the ski season and summer markets, attract more conference business and further develop its high standard of service, efficiency and productivity." The Chateau won a 1995 business development quality award and is a member of The New Zealand Way. QueenElizabeth 1 1 Army MemorialMuseum, Waiouru, is a finalist in the visitor attraction category. In the awards summary it is described as "a unique homage to New Zealand' s war dead.

"The museum' s new memorial ... is known as Tears on Greenstone - Roimata Pounamu, based on a concept developed by architecture students. It comprises an alcove of precious greenstone slabs. A soundtrack recites the names of the 30,430 war dead on New Zealand' s Roll of Honour." Mount Ruapehu' s Mountain Air is a finalist in the transportation category. It offers visitors to the Central Plateau region a unique view of the mountains. "Winners of this year's King Country Taupo Quality Awards, Mountain Air's pilots provide visitors with indepth information about the Tongariro National Park, the second-oldest National Park in the world," states the awards summary.
