Kiwi signs stolen and vandalised
Signs around the Tongariro/Taupo Conservancy which alerted the public to the presence of kiwi have been stolen and vandalised. DoC staff are disappointed and angry at their theft and vandalism. Many of the signs had been sponsored by a local Taupo company. All kiwi signs placed on roads around the
conservancy warning motorists that kiwi were still present in the area had been stolen. The signs had been put in place following a number of kiwi road deaths. Other signs asking visitors to control dogs being taken into areas where kiwi were present had been vandalised, mostly with anti-1080
slogans. Cam Speedy, senior conservation officer responsible for protected species based in Turangi said that new signs would be put in place soon. "I hope the new signs will be left alone so they can continue in their role in helping kiwi survive on the mainland," he said.
